  • Picasso 1995-2011

We sadly announce that our beloved Picasso passed away on June 8th. We rescued him when he was just over a year old. He was half black lab and half Australian shepherd and weighed approximately 60 lbs.
Picasso was truly blessed to have such a long life (16 years!) and amazingly, he had his own guardian angel. Two years ago this November, all indications of eminent demise were apparent as Jim and I prepared for the worse. Picasso hadn't eaten in over a week and spent most of his time trying to find a final resting place in our back yard. We tried to keep him comfortable as best we could and decided it was time to do something we had dreaded thinking about for the past 10 days.
On a Thursday morning, on the way to the Humane Society, we decided to take him to Fiesta Island for a final dip in the Bay. He loved the water and we spent many mornings there watching him swim out to fetch his ball. On that morning, he could barely stand but he still carried his ball around and it was very sad for us to watch him knowing what was about to happen.
Then, out of nowhere, a woman appeared. She was wearing a floppy hat and she was carring a tiny little dog. There was no one else there at the time and no cars for as far as we could see. As she approached us, she had her eyes on Picasso and asked us what was wrong with him. Teary eyed, we told her what was about to happen and she asked if we minded if she prayed with him. Of course, we said that was ok and she knelt down, held his head in her hands and prayed to God that he would go in his sleep when he was ready and that his family who loved him so much wouldn't be put in the position of making that decision for him. She went on a little longer and then stepped away.
As we got up to thank her, she had walked about twenty five yards away and then she disappeared into thin air. We looked at each other in awe, felt the hair stand up on our arms and decided we'd better give him another 24 hours. We took him home and that night he ate about 10 pieces of kibble.
The next morning, we took him to Dog Park and he was running and chasing his ball...he truly was a special dog and we are grateful for the extra time we had with him. He was as much a family member and companion as he was a great real estate ambassador! He will be greatly missed.
